This is the bizarre moment fitness equipment appears on a barren hillside, baffling locals.

Mr Li, a resident of Weihui in Henan Province, China, filmed the unusual sight along a mountain road in a remote area near his city on December 23.

The odd setup includes eight fitness machines marked as part of the 'National Fitness Project' and funded by the 'Sports Lottery Public Welfare Fund'. It was reportedly completed in January 2024.

The location, several miles from the nearest village, is far from any regular foot traffic.

Li asked: 'Who is this for? It's a waste of money.'

Officials from the Weihui Sports Development Centre explained that the square is intended for tourists at a nearby scenic spot, providing a place to rest and some extra fitness options.

However, critics dismissed this, noting that visitors are unlikely to use the equipment after hiking the winding roads.

Concerns about practicality grew after the General Administration of Sports issued guidelines on the proper installation of public fitness equipment.

Observers argue that the remote hillside location will lead to low usage and poor maintenance.

Locals fear the equipment, if neglected, could become a symbol of wasted resources.
