Mogadishu, Somalia - January 02, 2025 Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Faqi announced on Thursday that the diplomatic crisis between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa has been resolved, attributing the breakthrough to Somalia’s patience and restraint in the face of Ethiopia’s violations of the country’s sovereignty. Speaking at a press conference, Faqi said the Ankara Declaration was the result of Somalia’s firm commitment to resolving the dispute with Ethiopia, despite enduring provocations and infringements on its territorial integrity. “Ethiopia engaged in difficult negotiations with us over our sovereignty and territorial unity, leading to a diplomatic conflict,” Faqi said. “However, a resolution was achieved through recent understandings under the Ankara Declaration.” He emphasized that diplomacy “does not work with absolute rejection” when asked about negotiating with Ethiopia amid sovereignty concerns. Faqi also hailed Somalia’s election to the United Nations Security Council after 52 years as a significant milestone, attributing the achievement to the Somali Foreign Ministry’s diplomatic efforts in recent years. “Somalia’s diplomacy has proven to be active and resilient in facing challenges,” Faqi said, warning neighbouring countries against pursuing ambitions that could undermine Somalia’s sovereignty or territorial unity.
