A drowning Dutch tourist was rescued from a swimming pool in Thailand.

Friedhelm Herrmann, 85, was about to enjoy a dip in the pool when he is believed to have slipped and cracked his head on the edge at the Yensabai Condotel in Pattaya City on December 25.

His friends found him floating on the surface unconscious and called hotel staff for help.

Hotel employee Praiwat Supap, 58, said: 'I was working in the building and heard cries for help. I rushed down and immediately called the rescue team.'

Medics and rescue volunteers arrived after receiving a report at around 2 pm. They found the Dutchman with a severe head injury. Staff were trying to resuscitate him to no avail.

Friedhelm was rushed to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

A hotel spokesman said: 'We believe the guest may have slipped and hit his head. We will know more details once we review the security footage.'
