STORYLINE:

Russian student Nick visited a building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) project with huge arc-shaped rooftops in the city of Changshu, east China's Jiangsu Province.

STANDUP (English): NICK, Student, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University
"I'm Nick. I've been in China for two years and I'm interested in everything in China. Today we're going to figure out how the Wei Dian Wang (microgrid) works. So let's go with me. Look at the size!"

The BIPV project was built to cover workshops of Changshu Longteng Special Steel Co., Ltd., with an area of 176,000 square meters and a span of up to 223.7 meters.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LI YANMING, Head of safety and environmental department, Changshu Longteng Special Steel Co., Ltd.
"This is the building integrated photovoltaics project of Changshu Longteng Special Steel Co., Ltd. This is part of our intelligent microgrid system. It consists of 68,000 monocrystalline photovoltaic panels. Do you know where the electricity for the ships docked here comes from?"

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): NICK, Student, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University
"Actually, I'm a little bit confused. I guess using these charging stations and taking energy from the solar panels, but can you tell me the truth?"

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): LI YANMING, Head of safety and environmental department, Changshu Longteng Special Steel Co., Ltd.
"Yes, all the electricity comes from the photovoltaic panels above us."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): NICK, Student, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University
"Could you tell me please the difference between the microgrid and traditional grid?"

SOUNDBITE 5 (Chinese): ZHANG WENTAO, Staff member, State Grid Jiangsu branch
"A microgrid refers to users installing numerous photovoltaic panels to generate electricity, which is then stored. When the power grid experiences energy shortages, the energy stored in the microgrid can help alleviate the pressure on the grid."

SOUNDBITE 6 (English): NICK, Student, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University
"Could you tell me please why the company builds this microsystem?"

SOUNDBITE 7 (Chinese): ZHANG WENTAO, Staff member, State Grid Jiangsu branch
"Building microgrids can help enterprises use more green energy and significantly reduce their costs."

SOUNDBITE 8 (English): NICK, Student, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University
"The microgrid makes it really clean and keeps the stuff in good quality. And I want to stay here more. I don't know whether (there are) other things that make this place clean as well. I hope next time I'll come back here and figure it out."
