United States - January 04, 2025 Geologists from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory captured dramatic footage of Kīlauea's summit during a January 3 morning overflight around 7 a.m. HST. With permission from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, the team landed in Halemaʻumaʻu, the sacred crater linked to Pele, the Native Hawaiian elemental force of lava. Amid the searing heat, they collected a molten lava sample, swiftly cooled in a metal bucket filled with water. The rare sample will undergo geochemical analysis, offering insights into the conditions within the magma chamber and the fiery journey of magma to the surface.
