Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced on Saturday new archaeological discoveries in the Saqqara area.
The Egyptian-Japanese archaeological mission, conducted by Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities and Japan's Kanazawa University, discovered burials and tombs such as mastabas.
Sherif Fathy, Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, praised the efforts made by domestic and foreign archaeological missions to unveil ancient Egyptian civilization.
During archaeological excavations on the eastern slope of the Saqqara area, the Egyptian-Japanese mission discovered four tombs dating back to the late Second Dynasty and early Third Dynasty. The team also discovered more than ten burials from the Eighteenth Dynasty of the New Kingdom.
Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said that this notable discovery indicates that the current Saqqara cemetery extends northward to a larger area than is currently known.
