Heavy snowfall continued to cause major disruption across the UK this morning leading to runaway closures and motorway chaos.

Regions in the south saw snow on Saturday night which has now turned to rain.

But heavy snow is set to continue further today - as The Met Office issued two amber weather warnings covering much of Wales and the Midlands.

Most of northern England including Leeds, the Lake District and Sheffield can expect 3 to 7 cm of snow - with areas above about 150 meters to see 15 to 30 cm of snow, the forecaster said.

The Met Office added that rural parts could be cut off and delays and cancellations to rail and air travel is expected before conditions ease later on Sunday.

Parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and eastern England have yellow weather warnings for snow and ice still in place - as National Rail warns "be sure to take extra care with today's weather warnings."

Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds Airport closed their runways on Sunday morning due to heavy snow.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport has also posted on X this morning to say the runway is "temporarily closed" but the airport remains open."

It comes as Birmingham Airport suspended operations for a time overnight - but said it was on schedule for "business as usual" again this morning."

Newcastle Airport and Bristol Airport have also seen some flights disrupted this morning.

In a social media post, Newcastle Airport said: "The Airport continues to experience heavy and continuous snowfall and teams are working across the site to keep passengers and colleagues safe."

"We continue to see some disruption to the flight schedule and recommend passengers visit our website or app for the latest flight information, or contact their airline."

Poor weather is currently affecting various train routes as Great Western Railway, Northern, ScotRail and TransPennine Express services may also be affected.

There have also been reports of stranded motorists - with emergency services rescuing several vehicles on Wrynose Pass, in the Lake District.

Cumbria Police added the drivers of the six vehicles were safely escorted down the single track mountain road.

Several roads in the area were closed due to icy conditions including Hardknott Pass, Cold Fell and Birker Fell, according to Cumberland Council.

National Highways has a severe weather alert in place for snow for England until midnight tonight.

They have warned that up to 25cm of snow could hit roads in northern England.

Mountain Rescue Teams across the country have helped stranded walkers from snowfalls this weekend.

Footage shows the rescue of three walkers in the Cairngorms, Scotland, who had gotten into difficulty in the winter conditions.

The teams were working in challenging conditions - with heavy snow being blown across the area by strong winds.

Braemar and Aberdeen Mountain Rescue were called to the Pools of Dee in the Lairig Ghru area on January 2 - and the rescue was only completed 9 hours later.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Jason Kelly, said: "This weekend will bring a range of weather hazards to the UK, notable snow accumulations, freezing rain, ice and heavy rain as well as some gusty conditions."

"We have issued a number of severe weather warnings, including Amber warnings for snow and ice in parts of England and Wales. "

"Some significant accumulations of snow are possible across parts of Wales, the Midlands and northern England in particular, where 5 cm or more could accumulate fairly widely, with as much as 20-30 cm over high ground of mid and north Wales and potentially 30-40 cm over parts of the Pennines. "

"This, accompanied by strengthening winds, may lead to drifting of lying snow."

National Highways Severe Weather Resilience Manager, Darren Clark, said: "If you are travelling this weekend, keep your distance and reduce your speed. "

"Gritters will be out treating our roads around the clock when ice or snow is forecast, but it is still important to drive to the conditions. "
