This is the intense moment a black cat had a lucky escape as it leaped away from an approaching lizard.

Footage shows the wild monitor lizard creeping towards the feline in the middle of an alley in Bangkok, Thailand, on December 10.

Upon seeing the predator, the furry creature, which had been standing still, immediately jumped out of the way.

Meanwhile, the monitor lizard continued on its path, unfazed, as if nothing had happened.

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
