STORYLINE:

An Egyptian media veteran has shared his thoughts on the quality of life and peaceful atmosphere he witnessed in China's Xinjiang, noting that they reflect the region's economic growth and social stability.

Amged Shawky, an advisor of Egypt's official Middle East News Agency (MENA), visited Xinjiang for the first time in October to attend the sixth World Media Summit in Urumqi, the region's capital.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): AMGED SHAWKY, Advisor to MENA's chairman for the English news services
"During my visit to Xinjiang, I found the general atmosphere peaceful. I felt comfortable and calm. The city's order and cleanliness left a good impression on me.
Among the things that also caught my attention in the city were its picturesque natural scenery, various landscapes, the orderly traffic in the streets, and the polite manners and high level of friendliness of its people.
The region is home to several minority groups, including the Uygurs, who live in an atmosphere of harmony, understanding, and peace. The government has been establishing places of worship and an Islamic institute for them, demonstrating its support for minorities, including Muslims."

Shawky mentioned baseless Western claims about Xinjiang.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): AMGED SHAWKY, Advisor to MENA's chairman for the English news services
"I believe that the Western media's reports about the region are merely rumors and baseless claims, which will not diminish the positive impression of China formed by anyone who visits the country and interacts with its people.
The Western media and its loyalists refuse to acknowledge the truth, simply because the facts about Xinjiang challenge their interests."
