Huge icicle falls from frozen waterfall onto fleeing tourists below in China
At around 2:30 p.m. on January 4, a massive icicle suddenly fell from a cliff several dozen metres high at the Heishancha Waterfall in Huyi District, Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. The icicle shattered instantly into countless shards, causing chaos among tourists taking photos below the frozen waterfall. Panicked screams and shouts filled the air as visitors scrambled to flee the area.
According to the local scenic area management bureau and hospital, the incident left one female tourist injured. She slipped while trying to escape the falling ice and suffered a pelvic fracture. She is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.
Scenic area staff explained that the recent warmer weather had caused the ice on the waterfall to melt, leading to the icicle’s collapse. Despite warning signs and designated viewing platforms in the area, some tourists ignored safety guidelines and ventured directly beneath the icefall to take close-up photos, increasing the risk of accidents.
To prevent similar incidents, the local management bureau has cordoned off the site, set up warning tape, and deployed staff to monitor the area 24/7. They are also advising visitors to turn back and avoid entering hazardous zones to ensure their safety.
