STORYLINE:

Liupanshui City, nestled in the mountains of southwestern China's Guizhou Province, has become an unexpected haven for skiing enthusiasts.

With a warm climate, the city hosts three high-altitude natural ski resorts.

This has been driven by government support and initiatives aimed at developing the ice and snow economy.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): ZHANG KAI, Deputy general manager of a local tourism development company
"In recent years, with the government's vigorous promotion of the ice and snow economy, winter sports have gradually shifted from a niche activity to a widely accepted and participated recreational sport. Skiing is no longer just a sport; it has become a popular leisure activity. We can clearly see that the number of skiing enthusiasts continues to grow each year."

According to preliminary statistics, during the 2024 ski season, the three natural ski resorts in Liupanshui hosted nearly 200,000 visitors.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): WEI WEI, Tourist from Guizhou
"This place is bustling with visitors, and the staff provide excellent service. For instance, the ski equipment and protective gear are quite comprehensive and instructors are here to assist, making it a popular spot to visit."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): HU XINYU, Tourist from Chongqing
"I never imagined this, as I always thought Liupanshui was a warm city and that there wouldn't be any ski resorts here. But now that I'm here, I'm surprised to find that I can both ski and enjoy the snow. It feels great!"

Skiing has not only boosted tourism consumption, but also created numerous job opportunities.

SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): LI ZHENGYANG, Coach
"As an emerging ski resort, this area offers a variety of job opportunities.
The resort attracts not only local residents but also a substantial number of visitors from other places."
