A polio survivor crawls on all fours as she asks for donations at a Buddhist temple in Thailand.

Daojai Chimmajui, 49, visited the monks to pray and seek help as she wanted to reopen her coffee shop that closed down during the pandemic in Chonburi province, Thailand.

Despite having to scramble on the ground, wearing slippers on her hands to keep them from getting dirty, Daojai said life goes on for her as she hopes for a better life.

Footage shows Daojai with disease-deformed legs as she crawled on the ground before a Buddhist monk.

The kind monks shared bags of rice and water with her before giving her a ride home.

Daojai said: 'I had polio when I was a child, which paralysed my legs. I used to sell coffee, but during the Covid-19 pandemic, I had no customers, so I was forced to close it down.'

She now lives off donations from kind neighbours, government handouts, and the Buddhist temple, but Daojai said she does not want to be a burden for too long.

She said: 'I want to resume selling coffee, but I do not have money for capital to start up again.'

Monk Phra Khru Thaworn Satthakhun said Daojai is a good person and serves as an inspiration to others who feel disheartened about their lives.

He said: 'We help her as much as we can. Her life is an inspiration. I invite kind-hearted people who wish to help her to come to us.'

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a highly contagious viral disease caused by the poliovirus, which primarily spreads through contaminated food or water.

It attacks the nervous system, potentially leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, or even death in severe cases. While most infected people show mild or no symptoms, some can experience flu-like signs or more serious complications like permanent disability.

Although it has been largely eradicated in many parts of the world, it remains a concern in regions with low immunization rates.
