STORYLINE:

Monday marks the fourth anniversary of the U.S. Capitol riot.

Four years on, the country's political landscape remains deeply divided, and incidents of political violence continue to shake society.

On Jan. 6, 2021, thousands of Donald Trump's supporters violently broke into the Capitol building, and interrupted the certifying process of the 2020 presidential election, prompting hundreds of lawmakers to evacuate in panic and causing several deaths.

The Capitol riot has become a key issue in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

During his campaign, Trump repeatedly suggested that he could pardon the rioters involved in the Capitol riot.

Observers say that the move could deepen political polarization and embolden future extremists and violent actors.

Although Trump secured an overwhelming victory in the Electoral College, his popular vote margin was narrow, indicating that a significant portion of voters do not support his policies.

Following his win in the Nov. 5 presidential election, a survey by Pew Research Center revealed that about 53 percent of U.S. adults approve of Trump's plans, while 46 percent disapprove.

The survey also found that 41 percent of Americans are confident in Trump to bring the country closer together, while 59 percent express little or no confidence in his ability to do so.
