Luggage containers were blown away on Monday as storms battered the main airport in Saudia Arabia.

Footage shows the driving wind and rain battering the King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah on January 6.

Heavy rain in the city sparked flash floods that engulfed cars, washing them away as the streets turned into neck-deep rivers.

Airport staff warned travellers to check with airlines regarding flight schedules due to the adverse weather conditions.

State media reported that thunderstorms, heavy rain, and hailstorms pounded Mecca and Medina, with surrounding areas, including Jeddah, also being inundated.

Rescue teams were deployed to assist stranded individuals and vehicles in the holy city, and efforts to manage the situation are ongoing.

The National Meteorological Centre (NMC) of Saudi Arabia predicted moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for the remainder of the week.
