STORYLINE:
Egypt's Ministry of Transport signed on Tuesday a deal with Swiss company MEDLOG to build and operate a dry port and logistics centre in 10th of Ramadan, a city in Sharqia Governorate.
MEDLOG is the logistics arm of the Geneva-based global transport and logistics leader MSC Group, which has developed infrastructure for dry ports and logistics centres in 10th of Ramadan per a 30-year deal. This deal was signed in August 2023 with the Egypt's General Authority for Land and Dry Ports (GALDP), according to al Ahram newspaper.
Built in the 1970s, 10th of Ramadan is located in the eastern part of Sharqiya Governorate on the Cairo-Ismailia desert highway. The city is 46 kilometers (29 mi) from Cairo and 20 km (12 mi) from Bilbeis.
Egypt has constructed 22 dry ports and logistics zones in recent years, including in 10th of Ramadan. This is part of a broader initiative to build 33 dry ports and seven logistical corridors that will transform Egypt into a regional hub for transport, logistics, and transit trade.
The Ministry of Transportation is constructing other dry ports in the industrial cities of 6 October, Sadat, New Damietta, New Fayoum, and Beni Suef. In a statement, the ministry said that these dry ports would serve new urban communities through a network of railways (diesel/fast electric trains) and major roads.
Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir witnessed Tuesday's deal signing and explained that the construction of seven integrated logistics corridors would link manufacturing, agricultural, and mining industrial zones via seaports on the Red Sea and Mediterranean.
The 10th of Ramadan dry port and logistics zone consists of 130 acres designated for the dry port and 120 acres for the logistics zone. It is a key component of the Sokhna/Alexandria integrated international logistics corridor, which will link road networks and the new Robiki/10th of Ramadan/Belbeis railway line to the Red Sea's Sokhna port and the Mediterranean Sea's ports of Damietta, Alexandria, and Port Said.
