Villagers helped catch a large snake that slithered onto a road to look for food.

The residents spotted the 13ft (2m) serpent slinking across the median and banded together to secure it in Cavite, the Philippines, on January 7.

Footage shows the reptile moving onto the grass beside a lamppost when it was first discovered.

The neighbours gathered to help carry it onto a parking space nearby and then put it into a sack.

Fireman Herby Yngreso said: 'We were called to assist them handle the snake. We put a tape around its mouth and turned it over to the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).'

An officer from MENRO Engineer Marconi Austria said the snake might have come out of its nest to look for food.

The reticulated python is found throughout Southeast Asia, where they live in forests, swamps, canals and even in cities, causing them to come into conflict with humans. The species is one of the world's largest snakes and can eat humans, cats, dogs, birds, rats and other snakes.
