Michigan, United States - December 12, 2024 A chilling video from December 12, 2024, shows the moment a truck struck multiple police vehicles, underscoring the life-threatening dangers when drivers fail to move over for emergency responders. With the tragic losses of Trooper Joel Popp and Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Kerstetter in 2024 after being struck by passing drivers, Michigan is intensifying efforts to educate the public on the Move Over Law. The law requires drivers to move over one lane and reduce their speed by at least 10 MPH when passing emergency vehicles with flashing lights, including police, fire, EMS, tow trucks, and road assistance vehicles. If moving over is unsafe, drivers must slow down to at least 10 MPH below the posted speed limit while passing. The law applies to all roadside emergencies, and although not required, drivers are urged to move over for fellow motorists as well. This year, local police agencies and the National Sheriff’s Association are partnering to raise awareness and help prevent more lives from being lost due to avoidable accidents.
