New York, United States - January 09, 2025 A Chinese envoy on Wednesday called for international efforts to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and promote the political settlement process of the Peninsula issue. Speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting on the Peninsula situation at the UN headquarters in New York, Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, stressed that the current situation in the region remains highly complex and sensitive. He called on parties concerned to bear in mind the bigger picture and work together to prevent conflict or instability on the Korean Peninsula, which is in the common interests of all parties. Geng voiced strong opposition to the U.S. moves of strengthening military alliances, intensifying deterrence and pressure, and provoking bloc confrontation, which he said has severely undermined the strategic security interests of countries in the region, including China, and runs counter to the goal of a political solution to the Peninsula issue. He urged the U.S. to pay attention to the legitimate security concerns of countries in the region, discard the Cold War mentality and stop deterrence and applying pressure.
