STORYLINE:
Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit condemned on Wednesday the publication of an Israeli map claiming "historic territorial rights" in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, according to the AL's statement.
Israeli official social media accounts published a map that shows parts of Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon as being within Israel's territory.
The publication of this map should be understood in the context of the right-wing extremism and religious obsession of the Israeli government, the statement said.
"Announcing the intention by some Israeli official figures to annex the West Bank and reoccupy Gaza via expanding settlements and the publication of those maps shows the hardline intentions of the Israeli government, which endangers the regional stability and peaceful coexistence among people," the statement added.
Aboul-Gheit also warned against the international community ignoring such provocative publications and irresponsible comments that threaten to fuel extremist sentiments on all sides.
