Out-of-control tourist bus carrying students crashes killing four and injuring 10 in Indonesia
An out-of-control bus carrying vocational school students crashed, killing four and injuring at least 10 in Indonesia.
The coach, transporting 39 learners and three teachers, reportedly slammed into vehicles in Batu City, East Java, on Wednesday evening, January 8.
All passengers, including the driver, backup driver, and two assistants, were unharmed. The victims were other road users.
Batu Police Chief AKBP Andi Yudha Pranata said the bus was driving from Jalan Sultan Agung towards Jalan Imam Bonjol, emerging from the transportation museum.
He added: 'Earlier, there may have been some children from the vocational school who felt shocked, but the Batu City Government has provided a team consisting of a combination of BPPD and the Health Office to carry out post-trauma healing.'
The bus allegedly hit 10 motorcycles and six cars after experiencing brake failure.
The police noted: 'Apparently the vehicle had a technical error, on Jalan Sultan Agung the driver tried to pull out onto the sidewalk hoping for a braking function but it didn't work.
'Then an accident occurred on Jalan Imam Bonjol to Jalan Pattimura the bus stopped and hit a tree.
'We are currently focusing on handling the victims. There are 14 victims in total. Consisting of 4 fatalities and 10 others injured.'
The casualties included a mother and her 20-month-old baby. Two of the wounded are undergoing outpatient treatment, while two others are reportedly in serious condition.
Road accidents are common in Indonesia due to substandard infrastructure, poor road safety education, and widespread traffic violations such as reckless driving and lack of helmet use among motorcyclists. High vehicle density and insufficient law enforcement also exacerbate the problem.
