A Coast Guard cutter ship has begun icebreaking operations in Duluth, Minnesota.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw (WLBB 30) has started clearing ice in the Duluth-Superior Harbor as part of Operation Taconite to overcome the freezing weather in the region.

An officer explained that the mission of the operation is to ensure safe navigation for passing ships through icy waters, supporting maritime traffic during the harsh winter months.

Commanding officer Jeannette Greene said: 'We're kind of hoping the ice forms because it's fun for us to get to do our job. But mainly, the hope is that the ships can keep moving.'

The Mackinaw is equipped with an impressive icebreaking capability, being the only ship in the Coast Guard fleet with azipods, a marine propulsion system that uses an electric motor and a fixed-pitch propeller to improve manoeuvrability.

Since regular ships are not built to withstand thick ice, icebreakers play a crucial role by breaking ice ahead of vessels, preventing potential damage and delays. By keeping shipping lanes clear, these operations ensure the continued flow of goods and supplies to communities that depend on maritime trade in icy regions.
