Diver rescues baby stingray trapped in discarded fishing net
A diver rescued a baby stingray that was trapped in a discarded fishing net in Thailand.
National park staff members found the juvenile marine animal while carrying out a clean-up drive off the coast of Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi province on January 8.
Footage shows the swimmer using scissors to cut through the strings where the baby stingray was stuck.
The officer was swift but careful until the tiny animal could be freed. It was unhurt and glided away.
One of the divers said: 'We went to the area to inspect and remove fishing nets left by those who tried to fish illegally in the sanctuary.'
The spot was near Thale Waek, a popular beach and snorkelling destination for tourists.
The officers successfully saved the baby stingray without injuries and continued with the clean-up.
They collected massive ghost nets measuring 656ft (200 m), and the trash weighed more than 8 st (50kg).
Authorities said they continue to urge locals and visitors to help them clean the sea to protect marine wildlife.
Ghost nets are discarded, lost, or abandoned fishing nets that continue to float in the ocean or get tangled in aquatic environments. These nets, often made from plastic materials like nylon, can remain in the water for years.
