STORYLINE:
A Chinese peacekeeping police team is working in South Sudan for the UN peacekeeping mission.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ZHAO HUAN, Member of 10th Chinese peacekeeping police team in South Sudan
"In May 2024, I was deployed to the peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, primarily responsible for daily patrols and police work in the community. After arriving in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, I noticed that the local people were living in relatively difficult conditions."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): GAO YALI, Member of 10th Chinese peacekeeping police team in South Sudan
"When I first arrived, I lived in a prefab house, and the camp didn't have paved roads. Whenever it rained, the ground would become quite muddy. Clean drinking water wasn't guaranteed, and there were no vegetables available, so life was somewhat challenging."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): ZHAO HUAN, Member of 10th Chinese peacekeeping police team in South Sudan
"We often visited villages and households to gather information about their difficulties and problems, and worked with them to find solutions.
Lisa is a young single mother whose husband passed away from an illness, and her child was also seriously ill. The first time I met Lisa was near a school. She was carrying her baby in a sling on her back, and the child was crying loudly. Lisa's expression showed a sense of despair and helplessness.
After learning about her situation, we purchased formula, food, and other daily necessities from a shop. Guided by local residents, we went to Lisa's home. When we explained why we were there, Lisa immediately grasped our hands and tearfully told us she needed help, explaining that her child had been running a fever for a week.
Upon hearing this, we promptly contacted the Chinese medical team stationed in South Sudan. The team members and doctors provided medical assistance to the child.
Some time later, when we visited Lisa's home again, her child had fully recovered, and Lisa's face was lit up with a long-lost smile. That time, we assured Lisa that if she ever faced difficulties in life again, she could always reach out to us, the Chinese peacekeeping police team."
SOUNDBITE 4 (English): GAO YALI, Member of 10th Chinese peacekeeping police team in South Sudan
"Life in the camp is quite harsh. For this reason, our police team has organized multiple donations, providing assistance to people in the camp area.
On one occasion, during a donation event at a school in the camp, I met a young boy who shared his thoughts about his studies. I encouraged him to work hard."
SOUNDBITE 5 (English): ZHAO HUAN, Member of 10th Chinese peacekeeping police team in South Sudan
"Through assisting Lisa, I came to deeply understand the significance of my peacekeeping mission. It serves as an important bond connecting the Chinese and African people as we join hands to overcome hardships together. The locals even gave me a nickname, "hard-working Huan." As a Chinese peacekeeping police officer, I represent the image of China.
In my daily work, fulfilling my duties during the peacekeeping mission in South Sudan is my primary focus. No matter how challenging the tasks are, I always strive to complete them with the highest quality and utmost effort."
SOUNDBITE 6 (English): GAO YALI, Member of 10th Chinese peacekeeping police team in South Sudan
"The Chinese peacekeeping police team brings the values of our nation's love for peace to the places in the world where peace is most needed. I believe this is the core purpose of our mission."
SOUNDBITE 7 (English): ZHAO HUAN, Member of 10th Chinese peacekeeping police team in South Sudan
"Becoming a peacekeeping police officer has always been my dream. As a Chinese female police officer, I hope I can contribute my own strength to my country and to China-Africa cooperation, with all the light and warmth I can give."
