India: Hair loss epidemic unleashes panic after villagers go bald within week
Buldhana, India - January 09, 2025 Mass hair loss has left residents bald within a week across three villages, with water pollution from fertilizers suspected as the cause. This health crisis has struck villages in Buldhana district, Maharashtra, sparking panic across the region on January 9. Visuals show several villagers demonstrating how a gentle tug on their hair caused it to fall out. Medical staff and local authorities were seen assessing the situation, while others pointed to the bald patches that had developed within just a week. Villagers expressed their concerns, with one elderly woman showing a thick tuft of hair she had collected after losing it. According to reports, officials have collected water, hair, and skin samples from the affected areas for testing following widespread hair loss in three villages—Borgaon, Kalwad, and Hingna—located in the Shegaon tehsil of Buldhana district. Residents have reported rapid hair loss, with men and women losing tufts of hair over several days and becoming completely bald within a week. The alarming situation has sparked panic, prompting a visit from top health officials. A health department team identified around 50 people affected by the condition, with fears that the number may rise. Doctors are investigating whether polluted water or an underlying health issue is causing the rapid hair loss. While awaiting test results, they have advised residents to take extra care of their health. Dr. Deepali Rahekar, the Shegaon health officer, stated, "It could be due to polluted water. We have collected samples and will test them to reach a conclusion." [Exclusive Video rights]
