Thai university installs glow-in-the-dark road studs to boost road safety
Researchers installed glow-in-the-dark road studs to boost road safety in Thailand, where primitive highway safety leads to dozens of deaths each day.
Associate Professor Dr. Thanongsak Imjai from the School of Engineering of Walailak University unveiled the project envisioned to reduce the rate of traffic accidents in December.
He said: 'Our goal is to expand this technology across Thailand, particularly in rural areas lacking proper street lighting.'
The road studs combine recycled glass powder with glow-in-the-dark technology, absorbing sunlight to emit light for up to eight hours after dark. They can also endure harsh weather and more than 30 tons of pressure.
The initiative was funded by Japan's Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation, and the invention is now patent-pending.
The researchers said they are extending the application to craft luminescent benches and gravel out of recycled materials.
Thailand - where corrupt officials siphon funds away from education and infrastructure projects - has one of the highest traffic fatality rates globally.
As of October 6, 2024, there were 10,551 road deaths and 643,291 injuries reported for the year, averaging approximately 38.22 fatalities per day.
Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
