STORYLINE:

The construction of a marina in Port City Colombo will help Sri Lanka to become a new hotspot for regional tourism and investment, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath has said.

At a groundbreaking ceremony held Friday, Herath said that the port city is an important platform for Sri Lanka to attract foreign investment and enhance its international image. The development of the marina will fill South Asia's gap in high-end maritime services and attract more high-net-worth tourists.

Construction of the port city, Herath said, will help Sri Lanka to achieve tourism revenue goals and promote cultural and economic cooperation between Sri Lanka and China.

The port city will continue to inject new impetus into Sri Lanka's economy, said Colombo Port City Economic Commission chairman Harsha Amarasekera.

The new project will help the port city to create more employment opportunities and attract international high-end brands, said Amarasekera.

According to reports, the marina commercial project covers about 20,400 square meters and has a construction area of roughly 49,000 square meters.
