An American tourist was rescued after getting lost in a forest in northern Thailand.

Daniel James Murphy, 68, became disoriented while hiking from Ya Po village to Doi Thong, near Mae Hong Son, on January 8.

Authorities quickly launched a search operation following the report received at 9 am, with rescue volunteers and locals joining the effort to find the lost holidaymaker.

Daniel was found safe around 12:21 pm, emerging unscathed from the ordeal. The team reached the base point at 1:30 pm.

He thanked the rescue team, commending the police for their prompt action.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Suwit Bunyapen, Inspector of Mae Hong Son Tourist Police, noted that tourists getting lost in Pai's forests are not uncommon.

The police added: 'We strongly advise tourism operators to provide thorough information to tourists and warn them about the importance of traveling with experienced guides.

'Without proper guidance, such incidents tend to occur frequently.'
