A quick-thinking construction worker leapt to safety as a building collapsed around him in India.

Mahesh Kumar, 28, was carrying a pole under a large scaffolding frame moments before it crumbled at the unfinished structure in Uttar Pradesh on January 11.

Shocking CCTV footage shows him dashing away from the falling metals. He miraculously escaped unscathed, but dozens of other workers were trapped under the debris.

Mahesh said: 'Concrete was being poured over when it collapsed. Everyone fell with it.'

Minister of State for Social Welfare Asim Arun said rescue operations are ongoing for those trapped.

He said: 'Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation employed 35 workers at the construction site for the new Kannauj Railway Station terminal.

'Out of 24 who were trapped, 23 were rescued. Three had severe injuries, and 20 others suffered minor wounds.'

An investigation was launched into the incident while rescuers continued with the operation.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh said he has directed officials to ensure everyone is rescued from the collapsed structure.
