Palestinian death toll in Gaza rises to 46,565
Gaza - January 11, 2025 Storyline: The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 46,565, with 109,660 others injured since the new round of conflict reignited on Oct 7, 2023, the Gaza-based health ministry said in a statement on Sunday. In the past 24 hours alone, at least 28 people have been killed and 89 injured in the enclave, the statement said. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday that its troops are continuing operations in the Beit Hanoun area of northern Gaza. According to the IDF, soldiers are engaged in close-quarters combat with armed militants while searching for and dismantling military infrastructure. The IDF reported that four soldiers were killed and six others wounded during fighting in Beit Hanoun on Saturday, according to the Times of Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Joe Biden discussed progress in negotiations to secure the release of hostages in Gaza during a phone call on Sunday, Netanyahu's office said. Netanyahu briefed Biden on a mandate given to negotiators in Qatar to advance efforts for the hostages' release. Earlier on Sunday, a high-level Israeli delegation arrived in Doha, including Mossad chief David Barnea, Shin Bet security head Ronen Bar, and the military's hostage affairs coordinator, Nitzan Alon. While Israeli and Palestinian officials reported progress in talks over the weekend, details remain scarce. Israeli state broadcaster Kan TV, citing unnamed Israeli officials, described the discussions as productive, with hopes for a breakthrough "in the next few days." Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, told CNN's "State of the Union" program on Sunday that the parties were "very, very close" to reaching a deal but still needed to "get it across the finish line." A key sticking point in the indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas remains the issue of a ceasefire. Hamas is demanding a permanent truce, while Israel insists on a temporary pause in fighting, emphasizing that military operations may resume if deemed necessary for security.
