France: Tram Collision in Strasbourg Injures 68, Sparks Panic
Strasbourg, France - January 12, 2025 A violent tram collision near Strasbourg's main train station has left 68 people injured, authorities confirmed Sunday, following a rare accident that sent panic through the city. The crash occurred on Saturday afternoon when a stationary tram at the underground stop was struck by another tram that inexplicably began moving backward. The reversing tram, initially halted due to a traffic jam, rolled down a slope and slammed into the stationary one with significant force. Dozens of passengers were aboard both trams at the time of the collision. Emergency services reported that while 68 people sustained injuries, around 100 others managed to escape unharmed. Video footage posted on social media captured the chaos inside the station, showing the damaged trams, alarms blaring, and passengers screaming. One passenger, Romaric Koumba, described the terrifying moment, saying, "The tram set off again at full speed towards the station. When the collision happened, the doors flew off." Another witness, Johan Kirschenbaum, suggested a brake failure might have been responsible, recalling a loud "big bang" as the trams collided. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. Strasbourg's main train station, one of the busiest in France outside of Paris, remained operational following the crash, though the tram service in the affected area was temporarily suspended. This accident has left both drivers and passengers deeply shaken, as officials work to ensure such an incident does not occur again.
