STORYLINE:

With his second term yet to begin, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has made a series of expansionist remarks, including suggesting the potential use of military or economic measures to acquire Greenland.

His remarks have aroused widespread concerns across Europe.

Greenland, the world's largest island with a population of roughly 60,000, is a self-governing territory of Denmark.

Trump's interest in Greenland dates back to his first presidential term. In 2019, he proposed purchasing the territory, a move Denmark swiftly rejected and dismissed as "absurd" by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Following Trump's recent remarks, Frederiksen said that Greenland has made it clear that the island is "not for sale and will not be in the future either."

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the inviolability of borders is a fundamental principle of international law, which applies to every country, regardless of its size or power.

Analysts believe that Trump's renewed interest in Greenland seems to stem from both strategic and symbolic motives. The Arctic region holds significant geopolitical importance due to its mineral wealth and proximity to key maritime routes, and Trump's rhetoric has often emphasized national security and expanding U.S. influence in resource-rich territories.

Trump's controversial remarks have intensified concerns about the future of U.S.-Europe relations, with experts warning that the divisions could deepen further after his inauguration.
