A giant Christmas tree was taken down and fed to Himalayan tahr in Germany.

Footage shows the 100-year-old fir tree towering 59ft (18m) being chainsawed off the garden of Schonbrunn Palace on January 10.

It was then handed to Schonbrunn Zoo, where a Himalayan tahr herd fed on its needles.

Zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck said: 'These herbivores love climbing and nibbling on branches, bark, and shoots.

'The tree offers them a playful change and an exciting experience as they interact with it.'

There are 25 tahrs in the herd, living in a new 1,400-square-meter mountain landscape.

Schonbrunn Palace Christmas Market Managing Director Katrin Edtmeier said: 'This sustainable tradition allows the Christmas tree to continue bringing joy to both visitors and animals alike.'
