All 10 passengers onboard a small aircraft that crashed in a Colombian jungle were confirmed dead by authorities.

The Cessna 402 aircraft registered HK 2522 was flying between the towns of Urrao and Betulia when it crashed in a forest in the Antioquia department on January 8 evening.

The flight was due to arrive in Medellin City with eight passengers and two crew onboard, but lost contact with the air control tower.

The plane's remains were found scattered in the woods near Urrao on January 9.

Carlos Rios Puerta, director of Antioquia's risk management department, said: 'Unfortunately, there are no survivors. We have 37 personnel working at the site, and we are expediting the second stage, which involves recovering the bodies and coordinating with judicial police.'

The Colombian Civil Aviation Authority also extended its condolences to the families of the deceased.

It said in a statement: 'We share their pain in this difficult moment and reiterate our commitment to accompany them and provide them with the necessary support.'

Antioquia governor Andres Julian Redon said retrieval operations were ongoing as search and rescue teams powered through poor weather and difficult terrain.
