This is the moment a plane cabin shook as a powerful magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck southwestern Japan.

Footage shows the plane seats squeaking as the tremor rattled the aircraft parked at the Kagoshima International Airport in Kirishima City on January 13. The tail of another plane was seen bobbing outside the window.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake struck at 9:19 pm local time at a depth of 36 kilometres. It occurred in the Hyuga Nada Sea off the coast of Kagoshima Prefecture.

A tsunami warning was issued and later lifted after a 'small' 3ft wave hit made landfall 30 minutes after the earthquake. Locals were urged to stay away from coastal areas.

There were no immediate reports of injury or damage.

Japan sits lies along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
