Vienna, Austria - January 13, 2025 The far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) and the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) on Monday announced a preliminary agreement to cut public spending in Austria by 6.3 billion euros to avoid an excessive deficit procedure by the European Commission. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl told a press conference that the agreement to clean up the budget had been reached in just three days - coalition negotiations began last week - and did not include new taxes, but measures such as ending "excessive subsidies", ministerial spending and measures against tax evasion.
