Israeli FM confirms progress on ceasefire talks
Gaza - January 11, 2025 Storyline: Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar confirmed on Monday that "progress was made" in ongoing Gaza ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas being held in the Qatari capital Doha. An Israeli official said that all parties to the Gaza ceasefire talks have reached agreement on a three-stage deal regarding a ceasefire and hostage swaps, and they are waiting for the response from the Hamas side. A Hamas official said on Monday that the group is "very close to an agreement" with Israel, despite some remaining sticking points, according to an earlier report from CNN. These points include Hamas' demands that Israel withdraw from the Philadelphi corridor, a narrow strip of land along the Egypt-Gaza border, and commit to a permanent ceasefire rather than a temporary halt to the military operations that stared on Oct.7 last year, according to CNN. CNN also reported that the two sides are working on an Israeli-proposed buffer zone inside Gaza to run along the region's eastern and northern borders with Israel, the official said that Hamas wants the buffer zone to be 300-500 meters from the border line, while Israel is requesting a much larger 2,000-meter depth. The leader of the Israeli opposition party National Unity, Benjamin Gantz, announced on Monday that his party fully supports the emerging Gaza ceasefire and hostage swap deal, calling the swap deal high value and a strategic necessity. He also criticized the far-right Finance Minister of Israel Bezalel Smotrich, who called the current ceasefire a "catastrophe for national security," saying his Religious Zionism party "will not be part of a surrender deal." Despite positive signs in the ceasefire talks, Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have continued. According to a Monday report released by the Gaza-based health ministry, 19 Palestinians were killed and 71 wounded by Israeli attacks in the past 24 hours. The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 46,584, with 109,731 others injured, said the report. Shotlist: FILE: Doha, Qatar - Date Unknown: 1.
