STORYLINE:

The relationship between Russia and China is essential to maintaining global stability at a time of rising tensions around the world, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday in his annual press conference.

"The Russia-China partnership is one of the main stabilizing factors in modern international relations."

Lavrov said that Washington and its allies from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization are attempting to heighten global confrontations and hostilities, sowing discord and creating divisions across Europe and elsewhere.

The foreign minister noted the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is currently deepening ties with the Eurasian Economic Union, which aligns with the Belt and Road Initiative.

"Therefore, the structures that were created on the basis of the Russia-China partnership, Russia-China joint initiatives, certainly belong to a new type of association where there are no leaders or home base, where there are no hosts or subordinates. This includes the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, of course, which is developing ties with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The EAEU, in turn, closely aligns its integration plans with China's Belt and Road Initiative. Of course, this includes BRICS, which has become even stronger since the Kazan Summit."
