United States - January 14, 2025 A new wave of strong Santa Ana winds sweeping across southern California is threatening the progress made in containing the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County. The fires, which began on January 7, have claimed 24 lives, burnt more than 16,100 hectares, and destroyed more than 7,000 structures, with more than 150,000 people evacuated. In the last 24 hours, fire crews have made significant progress: the Palisades fire is 14% contained, the Eaton fire is 33% contained, and the Hurst fire is nearly 95% extinguished. California Governor Gavin Newsom proposed an additional $2.5 billion in emergency funding to help with recovery efforts, while Mexican firefighters and US federal agencies, including the National Guard, are providing reinforcements.
