South Korea: S Koreans divided over dramatic arrest of impeached president Yoon
South Korea - January 15, 2025 Storyline: Residents in South Korea are divided over the dramatic arrest of impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol on Wednesday, with some saying the move is justified while others believe it raises questions about authorities undermining the authority of the presidency. South Korean investigators on Wednesday arrested Yoon in his residence in central Seoul after 3,000 police officers and anti-corruption investigators gathered there before dawn, pushing through throngs of Yoon supporters and members of his ruling People Power Party who were protesting attempts to detain him. Later, a police motorcade was seen leaving the gates of the hillside residence where Yoon has been holed up behind barbed wire barriers and a small army of personal security. The arrest came after weeks of political turmoil in South Korea instigated by Yoon's unprecedented but short-lived declaration of martial law in early December, leading to his impeachment. An earlier arrest attempt on Jan. 3 had failed amid a tense stand-off and clashes between prosecutors and members of the presidential security service. Following Yoon's arrest, some questioned his claims that the arrest warrant was "illegal" and criticized his actions during the presidency. Others say Yoon has gone down in their estimations for his erratic decision to impose martial law, which marked the first such declaration since the country's military dictatorship ended in the late 1980s. However, crowds of Yoon supporters have in recent weeks and days rallied around the embattled president by gathering in large numbers at his residence. Following the arrest, some said the whole saga has exposed problems with South Korea's democratic system. Shotlist: Seoul, South Korea - Jan 15, 2025: 1. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Hong Seo-yoon, South Korean resident: "The president is currently claiming that the arrest warrant is illegal, but it was issued by the court. Above all, it makes me question whether a president who used to be a prosecutor enforcing the law is now denying that, and whether such a person was truly the president who upheld this country during those years." 3. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Jung Sung-hee, South Korean resident: "I used to respect President Yoon at one point, but as the president of South Korea, he has taken actions that are only fitting for a dictatorship, not for this era. So, while I respected him in the past, I no longer do now. I believe the sooner he steps down, even by a single day, the less this country will suffer, and he himself will find peace." 5. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Kwon Chang-jib, South Korean resident (starting with shot 5/partially overlaid with shot 7): "I thought South Korea was a highly advanced democratic nation, but judging by this situation, it doesn't even measure up to the level of democracy in a developing country. Looking at the outcome, the National Assembly, without a change in administration, is wielding power even more intimidating than the authority of the president under a presidential system."
