US: Families devastated by California fires struggle to rebuild amid uncertainty
Los Angeles, United States - Recent Storyline: In the aftermath of the devastating Eaton Fire, which ravaged Los Angeles County's Altadena, residents are facing a daunting recovery process marked by uncertainty over the timing and amount of compensation they will receive. Seven-year-old Henry Suarez managed to salvage just a few Christmas decorations from the charred remains of his family's home, destroyed by the California wildfires. For Henry and his family, the disaster has brought life-altering changes, forcing them to part ways in search of stability. His mother Deisy Suarez took him for a last glimpse at what's left of the only place he has ever called home. Now left without school or childcare, he and his brother will be sent to relatives in Florida, while his parents try to get back on their feet. "Are my needs being met right now? No, because I have to send my kids to be away from us, you know? And as a parent, it's not what you want to do. And support and help hasn't really come that quick. Everything that we're doing is because we are doing it ourselves, not because we get any sort of help. I know it might take a little time for them to get those resources. I just don't know how quickly they'll be able to do it," said Deisy Suarez. The Eaton Fire, which has scorched more than 14,100 acres (about 57.1 square km) near Altadena and Pasadena, is currently 27 percent contained. The Palisades Fire, currently the largest active wildfire in the Los Angeles area, has scorched over 23,700 acres (about 96 square km) and destroyed more than 5,300 structures since last Tuesday, with only 11 percent of the blaze contained. U.S. President Joe Biden offered assurances on Monday, that help is already on the way. According to Biden, people impacted by these fires are going to receive one-time payment of 770 U.S. dollars to purchase things like water, baby formula and prescriptions. So far, nearly 6,000 survivors have registered to do just that. Hundreds of people, who may not have other options for accommodation, are being hosted at shelters set up by organizations such as the Red Cross. But even for the Suarez family, the amount of compensation they will get, and for how long, is still unclear. Thousands of newly-displaced people are already having a ripple effect on the city's pre-existing housing shortage. Meanwhile, fires continue to rage in various parts of the city, adding more victims to the growing number of homeless. Shotlist: Los Angeles, California, USA - Recent: 1.
