This is the bizarre moment a pensioner cruised along a highway on a mobility scooter in Thailand.

Footage shows the elderly woman holding up traffic as she coasted along the road in Phang Nga province on January 13.

She was travelling at an estimated 12 miles per hour on a lane designated for fast-moving traffic.

Truck driver Bang Sen who was driving behind the pensioner said: 'I was worried for her safety so I stayed behind her to make sure she was safe.'

The woman carried on driving for another mile before Bang Sen overtook her.

Unregistered vehicles are banned from being driven on public roads under Thailand's Land Transport Act. Violators may face a fine of up to 10,000 baht.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
