South Korea: Yoon refusing to testify after arrest: S Korean investigators
South Korea - January 15, 2025 Storyline: Investigators in South Korea say impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol has refused to testify in his first interrogation session following his dramatic arrest on Wednesday. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) said that Yoon had consistently refused to make any statements and declined to allow any recordings or videotaping of the first round of questioning which was conducted from 11:00 to 13:30 local time. Local media quoted the CIO as saying that it is currently negotiating with the presidential security service on whether to transfer Yoon to the Seoul Detention Center now that he has been taken into custody. Additionally, the anti-corruption body is said to be considering applying for a detention warrant from the Seoul Western District Court, which could permit the detention period to be extended to a maximum of 20 days if approved. In response, Yoon's legal team issued a statement emphasizing that the CIO does not have the authority to investigate the president and said the arrest warrant is "illegal". The team vowed to hold the CIO and the police legally accountable for the unlawful execution of the arrest warrant, the statement said. The arrest operation was conducted after 3,000 police officers and anti-corruption investigators gathered at Yoon's residence before dawn on Wednesday, pushing through throngs of supporters and members of his ruling People Power Party who were protesting against attempts to detain him. The joint investigation unit said in a short notice that Yoon was arrested at 10:33 local time, becoming the first incumbent president to be arrested in the country's modern history. It came after weeks of political turmoil in South Korea instigated by Yoon's unprecedented but short-lived martial law declaration in early December, leading to his impeachment. An earlier arrest attempt on Jan 3 had failed amid a tense stand-off and clashes between prosecutors and members of the presidential security service. Shotlist: Seoul, South Korea - Jan 15, 2025: 1.
