Kalamazoo, United States - January 12, 2025 Dramatic body camera footage has captured the intense moments when a Kalamazoo officer helped a man escape a deadly apartment fire on Sunday, January 12. Emergency crews were dispatched to the apartment complex just before 7:30 p.m. after reports of heavy smoke and alarms sounding. Body cam footage shows a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety sergeant arriving at the scene and swiftly jumping into action to assist a man trapped on the second floor. The officer helped the man climb out of the window and safely descend to the ground below. The fire was brought under control by about 8 p.m., but tragically, the body of a 79-year-old woman was recovered from the building. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
