United States - January 12, 2025 A dramatic body cam video captured the heroic rescue of a woman who had fallen through the ice on a frozen pond Sunday night, showing the quick and selfless actions of law enforcement officers in a life-or-death situation. The woman had slipped into the frigid water while trying to round up her loose dogs at a condo complex on Rio Grande Circle. With no time to lose, a Florence police officer and a Boone County deputy worked together to pull her to safety, forming a human chain by gripping the officer's legs as they dragged the woman toward the shore. In freezing 37-degree temperatures, her desperate cries for help alerted nearby neighbors, who immediately called for assistance. Officers arrived quickly, crawling 100 feet across the thinning, snow-covered ice to reach her. "They instinctively knew, ‘We’ve got to get her out of there. She’s going to die,’” said Captain Greg Rehkamp. Despite the risks, the officers were dressed in regular uniforms without protective gear but acted without hesitation. The entire rescue, from the moment the call came in to the woman being safely pulled from the water, took only six minutes. "Very heroic," Rehkamp said. "I’m very proud of them. It was a very dangerous situation, but it had a good outcome." Officers believe the woman had been trapped in the icy water for at least 10 minutes before anyone heard her calls for help. The body cam footage revealed the physical toll on her body, with signs of hypothermia beginning to set in. "Without the quick actions of her neighbors and the officers, the situation could have turned out differently," Rehkamp added. "It can turn into a dire circumstance in a matter of seconds by falling through the ice."
