A Jetstar plane waited on the taxiway for a storm to pass in Sydney, Australia.

The Airbus A320 was preparing for takeoff when severe thunderstorms struck the state late on Wednesday evening, January 15.

Dramatic footage shows the aircraft stranded on the ground, offering passengers a close-up view of the flashing lightning storm.

Authorities said the storm system, fueled by an unstable airmass and an upper trough, caused Sydney Airport to halt operations, disrupting public transport and cancelling sporting events.

One man was killed, and widespread damage occurred due to damaging winds, large hailstones, and torrential rainfall affecting areas including the Hunter, Mid-North Coast, Illawarra, and Central Tablelands.

The deluge left more than 120,000 homes without power across Sydney.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned of continued dangerous thunderstorms, with destructive winds, large hailstones, and heavy rainfall expected into Thursday.
