A chilly orangutan wrapped itself up with blankets during a cold snap in Thailand.

Video shows the primate bundling itself up in cloth to stay warm at the Khon Kaen Zoo in Khon Kaen province, on January 15 morning.

Zookeepers have installed heat lamps and laid out straw and burlap sacks inside the enclosures to keep the animals snug amid the frigid winter temperatures outside.

Zoo director Tipawadee Kittikoon said: 'The animals at Khon Kaen Zoo are affected by the cold weather and strong winds. Therefore, the Animal Care Division has implemented ways to keep the animals warm.

'Khon Kaen Zoo cares about its animals. We want to ensure they can survive in various situations, and ensure they are healthy, comfortable, and safe.'

She added that staff have been giving vitamins to the animals to strengthen their immune system.

Thailand is experiencing a spell of cold weather due to the La Nina phenomenon, the Meteorological Department said.

Temperatures plummeted to as low as 8 to 9 degrees Celsius in the northeast, including Khon Kaen province, while the mercury dropped to 2 degrees in the mountains. The chill was expected last until mid-February.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thailand entered the La Nina phase last month.

La Nina is a climate phenomenon characterized by cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It often influences global weather patterns, leading to increased rainfall in some regions like Southeast Asia and Australia and drier conditions in others such as the southwestern United States.
