Afghanistan - January 15, 2025 The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported in early January that nearly 23 million Afghans—half of the country’s population—will require humanitarian assistance in 2025 to survive, amid rising poverty and growing risks linked to the climate crisis. Among the major issues the country will face in the coming months is the further decline of its economy, which the United Nations estimates has contracted by nearly 33 percent since the Taliban took power in August 2021.
