Brisbane, Australia - January 16, 2025 Brisbane's south-eastern suburbs were hit by a sudden and intense storm today, with wind gusts reaching up to 80 km/h. The powerful microburst tore through Carina Heights, uprooting trees, damaging homes, and initially cutting power to 25,000 properties across south-east Queensland. A massive tree fell onto a house in Carina, with the property manager, Rod McEwan, revealing the collapse struck a bedroom. "If it had been another time, it could have been a much worse outcome," he said, confirming no one was home during the incident. Energex spokesman Danny Donald reported the storm brought down 36 power lines in the Carina and Carindale areas. "We had 104 lightning strikes, which doesn't seem like a lot, but they packed a punch and now our crews are out there picking up wires," he said. Recovery efforts are ongoing as crews work to restore power and clear debris.
