US: Lava Fountains and Eruption Sounds Captured in New Video from Kīlauea Summit
Kilauea, HI, USA - January 15, 2025 A new video compilation released on January 15, 2025, provides a breathtaking look at Episode 4 of the ongoing Kīlauea summit eruption. The first clip shows USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists collecting tephra falling on Crater Rim Drive, an area closed to the public within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Viewers can hear the tinkling of glassy lava particles as they land on the road. Later footage reveals dramatic angles of lava fountains erupting from the summit, reaching heights of up to 100 meters (328 feet). The video also captures the mesmerizing sound of the vents, likened to the ocean, as molten lava cascades onto the cone surrounding the vent.
