This is the dramatic moment a helicopter pilot skillfully landed the aircraft and saved all 11 people onboard.

Footage shows the MI-171-SH helicopter, registered PNP 512, descending in a tailspin in the Ciro Alegria military base in the Amazonas region of Peru on January 16 afternoon.

It suffered heavy damage as it landed on rocks on the mountainside but all 11 passengers, which included senior members of the Air Police Directorate, were safe.

Peruvian Interior Minister Juan Jose Santivanez said: 'The pilot's experience allowed the aircraft to successfully land in an emergency, leaving all personnel unharmed and the helicopter with material damage.

'I would like to congratulate the pilot of this helicopter who has allowed our personnel to remain unharmed.'

The Peruvian National Police said in a statement the officers were carrying out an anti-illegal mining operation in Condorcanqui province when the helicopter reportedly suffered a mechanical failure.

The statement read: 'It is important to note that, thanks to the expertise and skill of the crew, risky manoeuvers were carried out to safeguard the lives of the occupants, which resulted only in considerable damage to the aircraft.

'The Peruvian National Police reiterates its firm commitment to the fight against illegal mining and, despite this incident, has reinforced its operations in the area, sending an air team to continue police actions, with the aim of protecting the environment and ensuring the well-being of all Peruvians.'
